The term 'the demimonde' is a reference to a region on Mars in Robinson's epic Mars Trilogy. There is little or no relation to the dictionary definition of the word, which is 'any group whose activities are ethically questionable.' What it refers to in the trilogy is a network of settlements that choose to exist 'outside the net.'
