Did the conclusion of Ann and Sax's longterm misunderstanding make anyone else feel so happy? I won't say I saw it coming (I really didn't) but with all his worrying it did seem to me that Sax at least loved her platonically. The only sad part is that they had to wait 200 years for this realization to occur; I'm just glad that KSR didn't hint about it earlier in the series or I'd be dying through the rest of it waiting for it to happen (think Nadia and Art). The Dalai Lama came to my area to give a speech, and I got to meet him!

I always wondered what the "killer of myriads", the killing gas mentioned in Book 4 (The Alchemist) was -- its Chinese name is evidently "wan-jen-ti", and while wan certainly means "myriad" and jen is "person", I couldn't guess the ti.

Turns out that it means "enemy" -- I'd been looking for a character related to "kill" -- and is described in Joseph Needham's seminal work, Science...

Another robotic probe has arrived on Mars safely. This picture is absolutely amazing:

It's a photo of Phoenix with its parachute, while landing. Not a computer simulation: an actual photo! Taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, another probe on orbit. That's it, Mars is wired.
